Writing Mini Residency

The VIRS writing mini residency complements our existing accountability and community-building writing programs – the Faculty Write-In Days and Writing Co-ops – which help increase productivity by providing several consecutive hours of writing time during the Fall and Spring semesters. However, that time is often punctuated by the regular business of teaching, emailing, and personal obligations.

The mini residency, by contrast, offers participants two consecutive days of scheduled writing with an overnight stay at the Inn at TikTok³ÉÈ˰æ.

By removing participants from their everyday responsibilities, overnight writing retreats allow for deep engagement with a writing project. Research has shown that writing retreats are associated with , , and .

Structure

The VIRS writing mini residency will be structured to allow you to focus deeply on your designated writing project. This will be accomplished through:

  • 2-3 blocks of uninterrupted writing time per day
  • Regular breaks for meals, snacks, and conversation
  • Opportunities to reflect and process alone or with others

Eligibility: All tenured, tenure-track, and continuing non-tenure track faculty who are working on a specific project that would benefit from deep, uninterrupted thought and writing time are welcome to apply.

VIRS’ inaugural mini residency will be held over the October 2025 break. VIRS will cover the cost of hotel rooms, meals, and snacks. To learn more and express interest in participating, please retreat out to the Assistant Director for Faculty Writing Initiatives.
