CULTURAL EVENTS

The ACS Cultural Events requirement and ACSP's own ACS Concert Series are inspired by St. Augustine鈥檚 desire to seek wisdom and insight with 鈥渉eart and voice and pen鈥 in community. ACS events seek to bring us out of the seminar room onto campus and out into the wider world.

From inspiring lectures by prominent figures to thrilling moments in music and storytelling, ACSP events and programs give special consideration to the Catholic traditions of humanity, solidarity and common good, while providing a forum to share the experiences and stories that make us all so different and yet bring all of us together.聽

CULTURAL EVENT REQUIREMENT

All students taking the Augustine and Culture Seminar must attend three or more cultural events per semester and successfully reflect on the event, either through written work or class discussion. This requirement of the seminar program receives course credit.

Departments, programs, and offices in every discipline across the University, as well as student groups, host these cultural events 鈥 from workshops on navigating social life at TikTok成人版, to academic lectures, to student-organized discussions. Events might also include performances, films, and art exhibits. Related to high-impact first-year practices that emphasize real-world settings and integrative learning opportunities (Kuh, 2008), these experiences aim to demonstrate that learning is not confined to the classroom. ACS-approved events take intellectual and interpersonal dialogue outside the classroom to expand student learning creatively through different venues, whether on or off campus.

To make the process of identifying events easy and accessible for faculty and students, ACSP has a cultural event submission and approval process.

How do I get an event approved?

Event organizers can seek the "ACS Approved" designation for their events by contacting Caehlin Bell or submitting the on the ACS website.

ACS Approved events must meet three criteria: be free to ACS students; be in-person on campus; and promote cultural and community engagement.

Are there any restrictions on the type of events approved?

Yes, the ACS Event Policy requires that approved events do not include fees. ACS approval is intended for students to go to an event to gain academic credit and expand their learning and sense of community. We do not want to add to their financial burden when they already pay for the class.

Additionally, volunteer and religious activities are excluded, as students should choose to participate in those events without the expectation of receiving course credit.

What does 鈥淎CS Approved鈥 mean? Do you advertise my event?

鈥淎CS Approved鈥 does not mean ACS endorsed. It simply means the event may be considered for the seminar event requirement. ACSP does sponsor an annual concert series and co-sponsors a few select events each semester.

Sponsoring organizations are responsible for advertising their events. ACSP maintains an and if provided with a graphic, can share the approved events there.

Are ACS Approved events the only events students can receive credit for?

Students who wish to attend an event that is not "ACS Approved" can request permission on an individual basis from their professors to use the event for ACS credit. Professors may also require or approve events or activities outside of the ACS Approved list that they feel suit their class aims.

General Cultural Event Etiquette

All speakers note our presence at lectures, discussions, and other types of cultural events, and we leave an impression about TikTok成人版 by how we behave at these events. In order to leave a positive impression of TikTok成人版, please remember to:

  1. Turn off your cell phone. Be present, to the speaker and with your fellow TikTok成人版ns at the event.
  2. You cannot earn cultural-event credit if you do not attend the entire event; Do not merely show up at the beginning or the end of an event.
  3. Question and Answer periods at the end of lectures are part of the lectures. Stay for them.  If you must leave after the main lecture/performance is concluded, sit in the back and make as little disturbance as you can on your way out.
  4. Many campus events are attended by members of the surrounding community.  Be courteous to fellow attendees: make sure it is easy to access seats and give priority seating to those who need it. Do not talk during a lecture or otherwise be a distraction to those around you.

Five Theatre Etiquette Principles

Written by an Actor

1.       Tickets are a contract.  If you have a ticket, whether you paid for it or not, that means you are committing to filling a seat in the theatre.  If you have a ticket and don鈥檛 show up for the play, you might have prevented someone from seeing it that really wanted to. Only an emergency should prevent you from appearing.

2.       Forget you have a cell phone for two hours.  Going to the theatre is a glorious opportunity to disconnect for a short period of time.  Texting during a show can be incredibly distracting to the performers on stage and to those around you. Trust us: we can see the glow of your screen.

3.       Engage.  You鈥檙e not watching television.  Actors are real, breathing humans, right there in front of you.  Demonstrate respect by fully engaging with the story/listening to the performance. You鈥檒l probably enjoy it more.

4.       Stay quiet.  If you save your comments for intermission or the end of the show, then you and your friends will have something to talk about!  Don鈥檛 waste your brilliant remarks in a whisper that is distracting to both fellow audience members and us.

5.       Stay awake.  Drink some coffee before the show.  Go on a jog.  Just stay awake.  Unlike a movie, you can鈥檛 press 鈥減ause鈥 on a play and finish the rest later.  If you fall asleep you miss your only chance of seeing it (and believe us, the performers can still see you).

ACS CONCERT SERIES

The goal of the ACS Concert Series is to bring high-quality professional musicians to our campus to introduce our students to live performances from a diverse array of musical traditions. The Concert Series is integrally tied to the Cultural Event requirement of the ACS Seminar experience and provides musical performances distinctly different from those that our on-campus student groups typically offer. Past performances have featured groups such as St. Thomas Gospel Choir, Vox Ama Deus, Magdaliz Roura and her Latin Ensemble Crisol, guest artists from the Curtis Institute, and the Temple Graduate Jazz Ensemble among many others.
